Thoughts of...Road Kill

If you do any amount of driving, you cannot but notice a sad truth. Road kill. Violent death on the road as birds fly and animals walk in front of our vehicles.

There are dove and pigeons all over this area and many are in the streets scavenging on trash and drinking sprinkler system runoff. Usually they flee an oncoming vehicle, although just in time! However, even after the narrowest of escapes, they quickly return to that place of danger. With the unending flow of traffic, sometimes they don’t make it out of harm’s way and back to safety.

Of all the places to feed and drink that God has provided them, why are they in the street in the first place? Can they not hear the oncoming “giant” about to run over them? Are they blind? Are their tiny little feet so insensitive that the waves of vibration from the road do not alert them? What is the matter with those pathetic creatures?

Theirs is a frightfully limited perspective. They care only for the insatiable needs of their tiny bodies. Distracted by the needs of their flesh, those that only look down and not up, or look up too late, become road kill. Their memories are incredibly short and the lesson to stay out of the street is never learned. Harsh and deadly realities to us are unfathomable to them.

Another sad truth is that animals do not come any dumber than sheep. As a sheep in the Good Shepherd’s flock (John 10:16), are you any different than the dove and pigeons that become road kill?
